Introduction[edit | edit source]

Starting with Generation 10 PowerEdge (PE) servers, Dell adopted a standardised naming convention. The names now generally consist of a letter followed by three numbers (ex: PowerEdge R710).

The letter indicates the type (form factor) of the server:

  • R for rack-mount
  • T for tower
  • M for modular/blades
  • C for cloud infrastructure

The first number indicates the number of sockets in the system: 1 to 3 for one socket, 4 to 7 for two sockets, 8 can be two or four sockets and nine for four sockets. This is followed by a number to indicate the generation of the server, and the last digit indicates whether this system uses Intel or AMD platform (0 represents Intel, 5 represents AMD).

For example: The PowerEdge R710 is a Rack-mountable, 11th Generation server with 2 sockets and an Intel CPU.

Before the 10th generation of PowerEdge servers, the naming convention used 4 digits (ex: PowerEdge 2950) where the digits represent:

  • First digit – Height of the server in rack units
  • Second digit – Generation of server (up to 9th generation)
  • Third digit – Server type (5 for rack server, 0 for tower server)
  • Fourth digit – Indicated whether blade or independent box (5 for blade, 0 for normal independent box)

For example: The PowerEdge 2950 is a 2U system from the 9th Generation of servers in Rack-mountable format in an independent box.

Popular Models[edit | edit source]

Currently 11th Generation servers are popular due price, availability and power.

R710, R510, R610.
