Introduction

PS4

With the introduction of HTML5-based clients for the ESXi host (and an equivalent vCenter client in the Fling stage) there's no longer the need to restrict your HomeLab management platform to a traditional computer with a flash-compatible browser installed. We have already had the suggestion of the Managing your Homelab via Xbox so I was curious if other consoles were up to the task.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • You can manage your Virtual Environment on the big screen from the comfort of your armchair.
  • You have an excuse to move the PS4 to your man cave or where a large screen is available. Another excuse for a blu ray player(WAF)?!

Cons

  • Some functionality is currently limited- uploading files to datastores
  • Smaller members of the family or unknowing significant others may end up shutting down your lab

Costs

The PS4 is available from all major retailers, please check for current local pricing.

Use Cases

The platform is ideal for emergency reboots of local hosts and VMs or specifically VCSA if it has crashed. For example I may also check on my RDP or Citrix servers so I can access the lab via my iPad or work device.

Things to test

  • Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse access
  • Console Access
  • Wii U Access?
